Athletics

Since the arrival of Padraig Griffin to teach in St. Felims in 1964 athletics has had a significant profile in our schools.  It has brought individual All Ireland titles to P.J. Leddy, Eddie Leddy, Fiona Lee, Gary Burke, Colin Griffin and Ronan Griffin.  We have had international vests earned by Eddie Leddy, Patricia Quinn, Gregory Smyth, Colin Griffin, Ronan Griffin, Eilis Quinn and Fergal Ellis with Eddie Leddy representing Ireland at the Munich Olympic Games in 1972 and Montreal in 1976.

More recently Colin Griffin has represented Ireland at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in the 50K walk and has realistic ambitions for London in 2012.  Currently Fergal Ellis is a student and the recipient of an athletics scholarship at Dublin City University.  Padraig Griffin was selected Irish Athletics Olympic Team Coach at the Munich Olympics in 1972 and again in Moscow in 1980.  In addition he has been Director of Coaching and President of BLE and in 1979 was selected Leitrim Guardian Person of the Year.

Our current crop of athletes include Laura & Eilish O’Dowd, Grainne Griffin, Fionnbarr Quinn, Ryan O’Rourke and Jack McGirl all remaining under the watchful eyes of coaches Padraig & Patricia Griffin.   Our most recent Connacht titles have been won by Ciara O’Dowd – SeniorWalk, Niamh Griffin Senior 400m, Laura O’Dowd Intermediate 800 & 300m all in 2009/2010.  Our last All Ireland success was Laura O’Dowd taking 3rd in the All-Ireland Junior Schools 800m in 2009.
