Congratulations to the TY students in Team C-Busters, whose ‘One Good Idea’ project has been chosen among the top twenty finalists in Ireland. The team will travel to Dublin Castle on May 3rd, to present their project to a panel of expert judges. This is the first year that students from Ballinamore PPS have entered the competition, which is organised by The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), in association with the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government. The students from TY had to beat off tough competition from hundreds of other schools from around the country to reach the national final, and their success was a result of months of hard work. ‘One Good Idea’ aims to raise awareness about sustainable energy, the importance of energy efficiency, global warming and climate change. Team C-Busters’ project focused on the issue of food miles, with the students running a highly effective campaign to raise awareness about the importance of buying local, unprocessed food, due to the large carbon footprint of many of the foods we eat today. The project involved surveys and poster campaigns and culminated in the students developing a ‘Low Food Miles’ stand in Donohoe’s Supervalu, Ballinamore. Team C-Busters are Philip Dolan, Karen Frehill, Meabh Gleeson, Sean McGovern, Keelan McHugh and Joseph Wilson. Well done to all concerned and a big thank you to Donohoe’s Supervalu for all their help and support.

Fifth Year Home Economics Students received a very informative presentation from French assistant Marie L’hermet all about the foods eaten in France and about the variety of fods in the different regions of France. Marie demonstrated a popular French pastry snack and then students got a chance to make some for themselves.
