During Christmas 2012 school holidays, a group of students from Ballinamore Post-Primary Schools accompanied by their teacher Miss Ní Mháille will ascend Kilimanjaro and while doing so are fundraising for Crumlin Children’s Hospital and The North West Hospice. The students will accompany a group from all over Ireland on the New Years Eve climb but are unique in that they are the only school group taking part. The students are; Méabh Gleeson, Siobhán Mc Tague, Donnchadh Dolan and Conor Moran. Their journey over the next 9 months will take them trekking all over Ireland in preparation and indeed in anticipation of the ascent on Kilimanjaro on New Year’s Eve aswell as undertaking numerous fundraising activities. The ascent will take stamina, determination and indeed much personal perseverance. Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and stands at 5,895m high. Not only are climbers at risk of altitude sickness but they will have to prepare their bodies for the various eco-systems in Kilimanjaro and the difficulties of climbing. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, North Africa supports 5 major eco-zones: rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert and glaciers and during the climb student’s will stay in each eco-system. This is a first for Ballinamore Post Primary Schools and we appreciate all the support we are getting in our fundraising campaign. The school launch of the project took place in the school on Wednesday April 18th by hosting a Coffee morning. We were delighted to have the support of John Kelly from the Hospice on the day. The students also held a hugely successful bag packing day in Tesco Ballinamore on Holy Saturday. We would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support with our fundraising campaign.
Our Charities- Crumlin Children’s Hospital & The North West Hospice
“ The Kilimanjaro Achievers” group is twinned with Crumlin Children’s Hospital-emergency care and anaesthesia and every individual group has the option to joint fundraise for another charity of their own choice. We chose a local charity the North West Hospice. Founded in 1986, the origins of North West Hospice lie in the pain and suffering of people and their families in the face of terminal illness, especially cancer. Since then, our Community has invested heavily in the Hospice through fundraising efforts. North West Hospice has been to the forefront of palliative care in Ireland being one of the first to provide home care on a 7 day week basis and the opening of the In- patient facility in 1998.The real heroes of the Hospice movement are those supporters who brave the elements to gather support from a generous and giving Community. Your support is as relevant today as it was back in 1986 as the Hospice seeks to improve the range and quality of services and support to patients and their families.
Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin, Dublin is an acute paediatric teaching hospital with 248 beds, employing over 1,500 staff. It is Ireland’s largest paediatric hospital. It is the national centre for cardiac surgery and haematology/oncology, major burns, medical genetics and medical research for childhood illnesses. In 2012 with your sponsorship we will be helping to provide funding to its Intensive Care Unit.
